Yawning Man

         About Yawning Man

~Non-conforming, unorthodox and home-grown...from an immeasurable, yet familiar distance...~

"Brothers’n’sisters, this wailing desert trio is truly the shit, and has been aiding my most recumbent and stonedest late night thunks since it first landed two years ago. Throughout the landscape music of Yawning Man, the post-Ventures, post-Shadows melodies of guitarist Gary Arce are constantly being undermined, up-ended and sent deep into a dark Joy Division territory, by weird chords and bass channels that create the kind of brooding and thunderous atmosphere that gives even the most easy-going a real fear of flying.

"Actually Alfredo and myself started the band. We were playing months before we put bass into the music. We were all roommates and Alfredo and myself were unemployed. So during the day we would jam with just guitar and drums coming up with music. Eventually after a few months of this, Mario joined in on bass and later Larry would join on second guitar. ~Gary Arce" (Click to read the entire interview)

"That whole era of Yawning Man is a true reflection of what was happening in the desert during the mid to late 80's. We were so fresh to our instruments and naive to anything outside the desert and not even remotely interested in record labels or publishings and percentages and the all business end of music." "Yawning Man was the sickest desert band of all time. You’d just be up there in the desert, everybody’d just be hanging, partying. And they’d show up in their van and just, mellow, drag out their shit and set up right about the time the sun was goin’ down, set up the generators, sometimes they’d just go up there and drink beers and barbecue. Sometimes it would be a scene; sometimes it would be very intimate. It was very casual and loose and everybody would like, while they’re playing, everyone would just lounge around. They were kinda like a house band. It wasn’t militant like Black Flag. It was very drugged, very stone-y, it was very mystical. Everyone’s just tripping, and they’re just playing away, for hours. Oh, they’re the GREATEST band I’ve ever seen~Brant Bjork" (Click to learn more history about Yawning Man)
